Educational Training and Experience

Physician residents are paired with experienced Westside mentors based on their rotation schedules. Our care model emphasizes prevention, chronic disease management and care for vulnerable populations, including those affected by hepatitis C, opioid use disorder and complex social needs. Our providers practice full-spectrum, evidence-based, patient-centered medicine in a Primary Care Medical Home model, and with a keen awareness of social determinants of health and their impact on overall well-being. As a physician resident, you will collaborate across a multidisciplinary team—including behavioral health providers, care coordinators, nutritionists and others—to care for Westside’s patients. From our Dover site, we also operate a mobile health unit that serves farmworkers across Kent and Sussex counties.

Nurse practitioner students are paired with licensed preceptors for a semester-long clinical rotation. You can select a rotation in Family Practice or Women’s Health. Students in the Family Practice rotation will care for patients across the lifespan, from infancy to geriatrics, while those in the Women’s Health rotation will provide care for patients that ranges from adolescent and well-woman visits to prenatal and postpartum care.

Nursing students complete clinical hours under the supervision of experienced registered nurses. During your clinical rotation, you will engage directly with the care team to provide patient education, address concerns and help reduce barriers to care. Day and evening clinicals are available based on your school’s requirements.

Medical assistant students are paired with a mentor with five-plus years of experience. You will get hands-on training in areas such as triaging techniques, taking vital signs, vaccine administration, procedures and exam setup. Our team-based model also offers shadowing in departments such as nursing, front desk and care coordination during your rotation. Typical externships are 160 hours and range from two to eight weeks on-site.
